Social reformer Jane Addams (1860-1935) pioneered the settlement house movement in the U.S. In 1889, she co-founded Hull-House to provide social and cultural activities for poor European immigrants. The first President of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Addams was awarded the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize, the first American woman so honored.
